In an earlier article, I wrote about some of our real-life experiences trying to start up an online business. We have sold eBooks, homeschool curriculum, and even home-study courses with online business how to lessons. And we have learned a lot about what works and what does not work.

In fact, the first eBook we ever sold was called Raising Leaders, Not Followers. My wife wrote it for homeschoolers to help them train their kids in specific character qualities. When she first questioned me about it, I was honest with her. I said, “Well, it is a excellent thought, but not really a hot topic. I am not really sure you are going to sell to many.” Would you believe she proved me really incorrect? My wife had netted a small over $11,000 in about three weeks’ time. That was our first lesson in internet marketing 101.

Not too shabby, right? On the heels of her first success, my wife started thinking about another eBook for the Christmas season. She said to me, “Sweetie, I am going to write another eBook about preparing your heart for Christmas. It seems like a lot of people get close to Christmas day and end up discouraged because they were not really prepared for the season. The presents are fantastic, but what do they do next?”

I told her, “That is a fantastic thought, but there is so much free stuff on the internet about Christmas. How do you reckon you will get people to buy it?” I was not too optimistic, but she proved me incorrect again. She sold over $2000 with her Christmas eBook. It turned out to be an unexpected bonus. And now every year, we roll it out a month or so before Christmas, and every year we get the same bonus.

Do you see what I mean? I will admit that I may not be the brightest bulb, but seeing my wife hit two home runs on the internet without any business or marketing training convinced me. I started thinking I could do it, too. I could start an internet business.

My opportunity arrived out of the blue with a Ford F-150 pickup truck I owned. My youngest daughter had been driving it. One day at softball practice with her high school team, one of her friends said, “Gentry, is that your truck on fire?” Would you believe there were 20 foot flames shooting out of her engine?

Turns out Ford had recalled the cruise control switch in this particular model. And I could see why. Once we got the fire place out, we could see that the truck was totaled. I called Ford, but all they could do was apologize. It seems they had told me of the recall by sending me a notice to my previous address in Texas. But we lived in Idaho.

I chose to start an online business, so I place up a small website that said, “My truck caught on fire.” I had pictures of the truck, and I opened up the hood and showed how all the engine compartment was burned up and all the wires were burned up. I said, “Why don’t you help me while I help you? I’m going to give you all this free internet marketing stuff. Graphics package. Some software. eBooks. Marketing tips.” All this stuff I had compiled and got free off the internet. I compiled it into a product and sold it for like $47. And I made $5,470 in the first 9 days.

I hope what you are seeing from these real-life examples is that you can succeed on the internet. Seriously! All you need is a small online business ho to and you can start making a profit.

Job Shifts During A Slump

One of the methods to deal with with a recession is thinking about a job shift. Not too many people like the notion of changing jobs during a slump. But, if you have already felt the result of the recession – say you’ve been laid off already, why not give a different job path a chance, right? It may not have crossed your mind to prioritize job security when choosing a career. But, whether you are picking your first career or making a swap, it can be advantageous to do so now, particularly during our present economic quandary. But, no job is 100% protected, although there are some industries that have employees feeling so confident that even if they get the sack, the need for such an employee is so fantastic that finding another career would be very simple.

So how do you select a job that’s right for you during a depression? Here are some depression-proof careers that are worthy of your deliberation:

Education

There is a large shortage of teachers. No matter how depressed the economy is, educationalists will always be in-need. Children will keep on going to school. Also, loads of unemployed adults may choose to broaden their education. Although teaching is not one of the highest-paid jobs there is, making only about $40,000 to $50,000 a year, individuals will still settle for a career that does not earn more because they are tired of being out of a job for a long time. This is especially right for those who might want to try something new anyway or those who despise the roller-coaster ride that a corporate life offers.

Healthcare

Career seekers with an Information Technology background are said to be a excellent match for the healthcare industry – particularly nursing. This is because nursing is an information-driven job. It is also a useful job during a slump because healthcare is an industry that does not often get affected during these times.

Accountancy

Auditors are also usually untouched by slumps. In a depression, individuals and firms are more likely doing their utmost to get more reductions. More people are monitoring their books, so the need for auditors or accountants is much larger.

Energy and Utilities

Energy consumers may economize, but their consumption will not stop. The same with utilities, people will still light their homes. So, jobs like maintenance and utility administration prove to be more stable than others during a recession.

Pharmaceuticals

As long as doctors prescribe drugs, people are going to take them. This means that if you are working as a pharmacist or as a quality assurance analyst in a pharmaceutical laboratory, you are in excellent hands.

Military

Since the armed forces is always hiring, particularly during times of war, during a recession soldiers will not be that affected. Serving in the armed forces also means that most of your living expenses will be paid.

Security

A recession does not stop crime. With the increase in redundancies, more people are considering robbing banks and committing other crimes. So, the need for security employees becomes greater.

Environmental Sciences

The handy truth is that the eco-friendly tendency is not going anywhere. This means that choosing a job in environment-care-related industries can be a fantastic job choice.

The Administration

Working for the government can be one of your best choices during this downturn. This is because many stable jobs can be found in the federal government. The administration will not stop to function even during a crisis.

With that variety of job options, it might not be that hard to find one that will save you from this economic quandary.

Before you can incorporate a company in Canada, no matter what province or territory you live in, you will be required to provide some form of name search and as well, you might also be required to provide a name search to register a proprietorship, business name or a partnership.

A preliminary name search is a pre-check of a proposed company name, business name or sole proprietorship name before you order your full Nuans name search report or other similar name search. Having a preliminary name search done prior to ordering a full search can save money in the long run.

The full name search is reviewed by the government to determine if there are any names which can be consider a conflict. It does this before it allows you to register your business. The federal government in particular will not accept a proposed name that sounds similar to a company name already registered.

When you order a Nuans Name Search or name search report with a search house normally the search house will do a preliminary name search as part of the service. You should question this in advance or confirm this on the website of the search house. You should not have to pay for both a preliminary and a full name search separately. The only time a preliminary name search should be paid for separately is if you are registering a business name, proprietorship or partnership and the province or territory in which you register does not require a full name search. More about that below.

There is no guarantee that a name is going to be accepted by a government just because you have a name search report for that proposed name. If a preliminary name search is not part of the service of the search house when you order a Nuans name search or similar search report then you should look for another search house. A Nuans search house has the ability to order a Nuans report without a pre-check of the name but a fully trained search house would never do so without a preliminary check of the name just to try and rule out any advance conflicts.

Reckon of it this way. Say you plot to incorporate a business with the name Johnson Lawn Services Ltd. The search house you are working with tells you there is no other name registered exactly as that. The search house does not bother to pre-check names as part of their service and there is a name already registered called Johnson Lawn Services Inc. Since the search house has told you there is no exact name you register your company. Mr. Johnson of Johnson Lawn Services Ltd. becomes aware that you have registered a company with nearly the exact name except the ending. He considers this competition and since he has had his name for a number of years he decides to sue you to obtain an order to force you to change your company name. It is possible he could obtain an order such as this if he can prove your name is a conflict. This would cause you wasted time and money. Further, would you really want to have a company with a name that close to another company’s name. It would also be a problem for you.

Upon receipt of a Nuans report or similar name search report you must take some time to look over the report to ensure for yourself before in register a business that there are no names that are too similar to the one you proposed to use.

A Name search would be accepted for registering a company in Ontario even if the names are nearly 100% identical. Referring back to the two names above, these names only differ because of the last word in the name. The Ontario Ministry of Government Services would accept this even though both names are very close. This would not be the case with the federal government since they are more careful with name acceptances.

If you are registering a business in Alberta, Ontario and possibly some of the other provinces or territories in Canada, you do not need a name search in order to register your name. The government does not as a practice pre-check these types of names and therefore it is your responsibility to make sure you do not have a name similar to another name. You could still be taken to court if you do not ensure your name is different than others. Really the corporate governments in Ontario and Alberta allow for business names to be registered that are exactly alike.

In these cases it is a excellent thought to do a preliminary name search which you would need to pay for. Therefore in a case where you do not have to provide a name search report to register a business name, partnership or sole proprietorship, you should do a preliminary name search. Keep in mind that many search houses will do the preliminary name search for free if you chose their service to register your business name, but, if you have any concerns about that just write them and question them what the policy is before you buy.

Are you looking for some online business thoughts? Sometimes the thoughts on the internet can be hypothetical, but if you are like me, you want to hear a real-life person’s tale. You want to hear how he or she build a business from scratch and not because they are internet marketing experts. I know exactly what you mean.

So a small bit about us. My wife Kerry and I really are the couple next door. We are not gurus. We are just two people who happened to get into internet marketing by accident. We stumbled upon the secret to making information products that are very profitable, require small time, and give us tremendous amounts of freedom. I am a poster child for somebody who started an internet company late in life. I did not start this thing until I was in my 40s. In fact, I started all of this because I was going to seminary and did not have my regular income.

Online Business Thought #1 – use the Knowledge in Your Head

The truth is that if we can do it, you can, too. Like I said, I have not always had an online business. For 20 years, I did home remodeling. Then my wife started up a small company called Curriculum Connection. She wanted to help other homeschoolers find curriculum to use. As it grew, she started asking me, “Steve, do you know how to build web pages? How can we get online with our products?” So I started working on it, and even though I was clueless at first, I quickly figured it out. At the same time, I was in seminary.

So I was 2000 miles from home. No friends, no family, and no job. And I had to replace that remodeler income it took me 20 years to build. I had to replace it quick. And I had to do all of this in my part-time because seminary required me to read 15,000 pages a year!

That got me looking for the perfect business. And I know that you probably have your hands full, too. You have a lot going on, but you can take your thought for a business and start building it today. Soon you might even see your income surpass your current job.

Online Business Thought #2 – Define Your Criteria

So I sat down and wrote out my expectations for my perfect business. I wanted to make a product one time and then get paid for it repeatedly. I only had a small amount of time to work each week, so I needed to be paid well in that time. I needed a product that was simple for me, my wife, and my partners if I ever had any. I really wanted a business that would run automatically with very small input from me. I was looking for a weekly, even monthly, paycheck. I also wanted very few start-up costs. Sounds realistic, right?

Well, a lot of people would say I was asking for the moon. But reckon about this. The only thing I know of that will meet all of those criteria is selling information products on the internet. Because with an info product, you can make something one time and get paid over and over and over.

You can invest a few hours a week and get paid really, really well. You can sell a product, have it get delivered, get paid, have your affiliate partners get paid all without you doing a thing. Just set it and forget it. And you can turn every sale into a monthly income stream.

Online Business Thought #3 – Reckon Realistically

You may have multiple dollar signs flashing through your mind, but I challenge you to reckon realistically. You can start an online business with only a small investment. You can own a domain name for $15 a year. You can pay $50 a year to host your site and another $20 to use an autoresponder. It is a excellent thought to start small and grow into your business. Reckon of it as a snowball rolling downhill.

So if you have an thought, start today! Take these online business thoughts and start to market your products. You will find yourself headed to more financial freedom.
